Naturals in the Media Spotlight

Hello chicas & chicos!!

Lately I have noticed an influx of natural haired celebrities in the spotlight. From new songstress Elle Varner’s fabulously voluminous tresses, Solange Knowles at red carpet events sporting her fro, Jill Scott gracing the cover of Essence with her TWA, to Janelle Monae’ becoming a Cover Girl spokesmodel, mainstream media may finally be realizing that natural hair is not just another fad. Although we have been seeing natural haired beauties on the runway and television for a while now, it is evident that coily,curly, kinky hair is being showcased on a larger scale by a broad range of women. Several naturals I have been able to converse with on this subject have mentioned that seeing the Chris Rock documentary “Good Hair” helped them to decide to start their natural hair journey. While other naturals have said that they were embarking on a journey to a healthier lifestyle (clean eating, detoxing, use of all-natural/organic products, fitness, etc.) and they realized that continuing to put these harsh chemicals in their hair was negating what they were ultimately trying to accomplish. I am positive that both ideologies, as well as other factors, have played a major part in helping women to make the decision to go natural.
